It is believed that Hanuman have landed on Andaman, while searching for Sita, when he was on his way to Ravana’s kingdom in Sri Lanka.
Is is also said that European traveller Marco Polo would have given this island modern name Nicobar between 12th and 13th century.
In the 17th century, the Maratha empire established it’s base for ships on the islands.
During World War II, the islands were under the control of Japanese.
In 1945, Japanese military delegation surrendered the islands to Lieutenant Colonel Nathu Singh, commanding officer of the Rajput Regiment.
It became part of India in 1950 and was declared as a union territory of the nation in 1956.
One of the seven Union Territories of India, Andaman and Nicobar islands are situated 150 km north of Aceh in Indonesia and separated from Thailand and Myanmar (Burma) by the Andaman Sea.
