The Rajput kings controlled the region till they were defeated by the Marathas in the mid 18th century. In 1779, the Marathas formed an alliance with the Portuguese and gave them all powers to rule the region. The control of the Portuguese continued till the region gained independence on 2 August 1954. It was merged with the Union of India in the year 1961 and became a territory of Republic of India.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli are two separate geographical entities. Nagar Haveli lies between Maharashtra and Gujarat and 1km to the northwest, the smaller enclave of Dadra is surrounded by Gujarat.


Enclosed between Gujarat to the north and Maharashtra to the south, Dadra and Nagar Haveli is a union territory in Western India. It’s capital is Silvassa.

The main festivals are- Monsoon Magic Festival (July-August), Nariyal Poornima (August), Tarpa Festival and Craft Mela (November) and Kite Festival (January).

From June to September, it rains heavily there. So, the best time to visit is from November to March.

If you are planning to travel by air, then you need to book a flight for Mumbai. Once, you get down at airport, you can hire a taxi or take a rental car to Silvassa.

The nearest railway station is at Vapi, Gujarat, which is 25km from Silvassa.

Travelling by road is also not difficult. You can take NH-8, from where Silvassa can be reached.
